Cadet Rousselle-Ecole was founded in September 2007 by two local French mothers: Béatrice, a 10 year qualified French teacher in a French private London primary school and Isabelle, an ex City lawyer. The school was the logical continuation of the French playgroup Cadet Rousselle (founded in 2003 by Isabelle when her first child was born) still running at the West Norwood Park One O’Clock Club.
The school is going from strength to strength and currently opens two mornings a week during term time. It welcomes primarily bilingual children (French and English) aged between 2 and 5 into a French environment where French is not taught as a foreign language but simply used as a living language. Mirroring a typical French primary school, it focuses on the child’s independence and language skills in French.
With a view of opening a third morning a week as from September 2009 for “trilingual” children in the making, the school has also started offering places to non French speakers in the firm belief that acquiring a third language for children who are already bilingual should be (and is) a natural process.
